3 Causes Of Dehydration

Posted on

You are probably aware that the cells in your body need water in order to survive. But did you know that the human body is made up of 60% water? Did you also know that it's possible for the body to not have enough water in its system? When this happens, it is called dehydration. This can be a serious issue, and in cases of severe dehydration, you may need to go to a health care clinic for IV hydration. One of the best ways to avoid getting dehydrated is knowing what causes it.

Here are three causes of dehydration.

1. Diarrhea

Anytime your body loses large amounts of fluid, it can become dehydrated. One way the body loses fluid is if you have diarrhea. This is especially true if diarrhea comes on suddenly or if it lasts for several days. If you have diarrhea and you notice any of the following symptoms, you are probably dehydrated:

  • Your urine is darker than normal
  • You feel weak or fatigued
  • You feel dizzy or light-headed
  • You don't sweat

In order to prevent dehydration when you have diarrhea, it's best to drink oral rehydration solutions. Drinking these kinds of liquids are better than just drinking plain water, because along with replenishing fluids, they also help to restore electrolytes, which are important for rehydration.

2. Vomiting

There are many things that induce vomiting. These include bacteria and viruses, such as getting influenza or food poisoning. Having an ulcer or an inflammation in the stomach lining can also cause vomiting.

Vomiting for several days can cause the body to become dehydrated. This is especially the case when you are feeling nauseous and are unable to keep liquids down. Dehydration is at a higher risk of occurring if you also have diarrhea.

3. Heat Exposure

You can also become dehydrated if you have spent too much time outside in the heat. You have an increased chance of becoming dehydrated if you have not been drinking enough water while spending time in the sun. If you need to be out in the heat, there are some ways to keep from getting dehydrated.

Along with drinking plenty of water, you should also wear loose-fitting clothing and cover your skin as much as possible. If you get a sunburn, this increases the chances of dehydration. You will also want to limit your physical activity, because if you sweat too much, this can lead to dehydration.

If you have become dehydrated, rehydration is imperative. One way to get fluids back into the body is IV therapy. If you want to know more about IV hydration, contact a health care clinic in your area.
